Encore Boston Harbor is the only state-authorized casino in the Greater Boston area. Its location is 30 acres on the Mystic River, the former site of a Monsanto chemical plant. Toxic waste cleanup was required before construction. In August 2016 the state Department of Environmental Protection approved and issued a waterfront development permit allowing construction to begin.

Encore Boston Harbor Will Open June 23

The scheduled date for the long-anticipated opening of Encore Boston Harbor Resort will be June 23, 2019.

After three years of construction at a cost of $2.6 billion, Encore Boston Harbor will become an immediate destination casino with an expected draw of 8 million visitors annually.

The casino at Encore is a huge 210,000 square-feet with 3,158 slot machines, 143 table games and a large poker room with 88 tables. The 27-story hotel tower features 671 5-star, luxury room accommodations. Throughout the 3-million square-foot resort are 15 restaurants and bars. A public walkway along the harbor is open year round.

Mohegan Sun ready to buy Encore Boston Harbor

December 01, 2018

If state regulators decide to remove the gaming license owned by Wynn Resorts for the Encore Boston Harbor casino, the Mohegan Sun will offer to buy the casino for $2.5 billion.

Wynn Resorts has undergone a ten-month long investigation over allegations of sexual harassment by Steve Wynn and the company's alleged attempt to hide any knowledge of the harassment. Depending on the findings, the gaming license could be removed by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

The gaming commission has been sued in the past by the Mohegan Sun. The lawsuit was over the commission awarding the gaming license to Wynn Resorts instead of Mohegan Sun.

A decision on revoking the casino license is pending a ruling from a judge in Nevada. The judge is hearing requests from Steve Wynn that would not allow for reports to be released to the public.

Everett Casino is renamed Encore Boston Harbor (opens summer 2019)

There will be a new name given to Wynn Boston Harbor casino. It will be renamed Encore Boston Harbor. The new luxury resort is currently under construction.

It will be located next to the Mystic River. Also, it will be close to the financial district and Boston's Logan International Airport.

Due to the allegations that have been filed against Steve Wynn, the company decided to rebrand the project. Wynn is the founder and is being accused of sexual misconduct.

The project will cost an estimated $2.5 billion to complete. It has redeveloped 33 acres of riverfront property. The land was previously used for industrial businesses. In addition to the casino, other plans include a resort hotel. A spa. Multiple dining locations. Retail shopping. Also, space for events and meetings.

A public feature will also be the harborwalk that will be open all year. There will be space for picnics. An outdoor performance area. Pathways for people to walk or ride bikes. Shopping and restaurants with water views. Boat docks and viewing decks.

It is being described as the largest private project being built in one phase that has ever happened in the state's Commonwealth. 4,000 union trade jobs would be created. When the casino resort is opened, an additional 4,000 people will be permanently employed to handle the day to day operations.

No official opening date has been announced. However, the new Encore Boston Harbor is planning to open to the public in the summer of 2019.

The president of Encore Boston Harbor has assured employees that the Everett casino is not for sale.

“It has been falsely reported that Encore Boston Harbor is for sale. I want to assure you that our company has not engaged in any conversations about the sale of the property,” Brian Gullbrants wrote in a message dated Saturday, which was obtained by MassLive.

“In fact, we are very excited about and committed to the future of Encore Boston Harbor and we cannot wait until we are fully re-open, and we have all of our team members back with us every day,” Gullbrants continued. “The team is hard at work planning for the future of Encore, post-COVID, and we can’t wait to share all of these exciting new ideas with you.”

An article published Friday by the Everett Leader Herald reported that the casino was for sale and cited an unnamed source.

Casinos have struggled during the coronavirus pandemic and have had limited operations with safety protocols. In October, casinos were allowed to begin offering roulette again, but still have seen a low numbers of patrons.

A stay-at-home advisory issued by Gov. Charlie Baker in November requires some businesses - including casinos - to close at 9:30 p.m. Last month, Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that Encore Boston Harbor could see between 670 and 1,000 full-time equivalent workers furloughed because of the curfew.

In August, layoffs of 385 employees were announced, and the casino said it didn’t anticipate the positions returning in 2020. Encore Boston Harbor opened in June 2019.
